Crossing the Country RV Style With No Reservations

Crossing the country, RV-style, with no plans or reservations, is always an adventure.  Even with meticulous plotting, there is no way to plan for all the variables that will pave your way from point A to point B.  Thanks to Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and our favorite travel Apps like RV LIFE PRO TRIP WIZARD and WINDY, we can navigate the road ahead with a swagger that the pioneers never dreamed possible.

After a six-week visit with family and friends in Colorado, it was time to air up the tires, pack up the fifth wheel, and head for our home base in Florida.  As usual, we decided to hold off on picking our route for the 2000-mile journey until we understood the current weather patterns across the Great Plains and the Southeast states.  With no time constraints, no reservations, and no pre-conceived waypoints we decided to simply follow the fair winds home.

We use the free app WINDY daily, whether at home or away.  We are not sponsored or affiliated but highly recommend it nonetheless. This weather forecasting app is unique and powerful because you can scroll through the upcoming ten days for any specific location on Earth and determine anticipated wind speeds and directions, thunderstorms, precipitation, and dozens of other weather-related variables.  The morning of our departure from Denver, there were 35 miles per hour south to north winds that we would have to fight pulling our fifth wheel no matter which route we selected.  We decided to head straight east on I-70 as expeditiously as possible to get beyond them.

Once underway, Tammy went to work using her Go-To RV LIFE PRO TRIP WIZARD app to locate the most reasonably priced overnight stay options with the best reviews.  Ellis Kansas had a city campground with open full hook-up sites for $25 per night, a perfect option just beyond our 300-mile-per-day goal.  On day two, we decided to turn south at I-15 to favor headwinds over crosswinds, and once again, we booked a site at Guthrie, Oklahoma, at the last minute for $43.  We finally found ourselves in those fair winds that we were looking for.

Night number three was a pleasant surprise.  The highly popular Downtown Riverside RV Park in Little Rock, Arkansas, had a last-minute one-night opening for a riverfront back-in site with sweeping views of the Arkansas River and the city skyline for $50.  Despite being a bit road-weary, we still managed to get out the bikes and ride over the converted rails-to-trails bridge to the Clinton Presidential Library and Wetlands Park.  We left Little Rock with a pledge to come back at some point in the future.  We were now halfway to Florida, we were in the clear weather-wise, and we set our sights on an upcoming two-night reprieve somewhere in Mississippi, but we could figure that out along the way.  So far, crossing the country with no plans and no reservations was working fine.  Stay tuned to our next post for the remainder of our journey home.
